Our Instructors
Meet Our Directors
The studio is a collaborative partnership between directors Julie Mytka and Avery Brown. After both had worked in performing arts contracts all over Canada and internationally, they recognized the benefits of bringing music and dance training under one roof. Joining this duo is a dynamic group of professional instructors delivering engaging classes for students of all experience levels.
Julie Mytka
Julie Mytka is the Director and CEO of Sound in Motion, where she has fostered a vibrant and positive atmosphere for students of all ages and levels since the studio’s opening in 2010.
After her graduation from the Dance Performance program at Toronto Metropolitan University, Julie embarked on a dance career that blended performance and education.
She has performed in iconic musicals like West Side Story, Guys and Dolls, and Sweet Charity and continues to perform as an independent dancer and with local dance companies in London, ON.
In addition to performance, Julie has a depth of experience in education and holds teaching certifications from the Royal Academy of Dance, Acrobatic Arts, Progressing Ballet Technique and Alixa Flexibility. Julie takes this knowledge and carefully crafts all of the programs at Sound in Motion to ensure safe and enjoyable progress for students.
One of her proudest achievements is creating Sound in Motion’s Company Dance Theatre program. This program combines more intensive technical training with frequent opportunities to perform in full-scale theatre productions. Beyond the thrilling dance skills, dancers learn the traditions of theatre and the expectations of the professional industry in a team-based atmosphere.
Whether students are training vocationally or recreationally, Julie believes in building the confidence of every student. She understands the importance of the inherent life skills students learn from music and dance like being open to new experiences and having the ability to learn and grow from feedback. Julie believes in fostering an environment at Sound in Motion where everyone’s journey is valued and celebrated!
Avery Brown
Avery Brown is co-owner and the director of the music department at Sound In Motion.
Avery’s philosophy on music education was inspired from his youth, where he was afforded a deep and varied musical experience. Classical piano and choir were his introduction to musical discipline and it felt like home.
The choir he was a member of was a world class singing ensemble and through the years toured as choir-in-residence at Windsor Castle, Salisbury Cathedral, St. Georges Chapel in Westminster Abbey, Norwich Cathedral and many others, offering a look at what can be accomplished with focus and inspired direction. Around high school Avery started his exploration into jazz music. He credits piano and vocal teacher, Winston Noren for leading his transition into a more varied interpretation of music, which ultimately let to him being offered a full scholarship to the fledgling Mount Royal College Jazz Performance Program. Calgary music legend, Eric Friedenberg was in charge of that rodeo and it was an absolutely wonderful, eye-opening two years for Avery.
Avery has gone on to perform as a pianist, keyboardist, trombonist and singer in bands, choirs and orchestras. He has composed, directed and conducted for professional theatre for 30 years. If Avery were to explain what is was about his introduction to music that has served him steadfastly through the years, he would undoubtedly say, space. The space to discover his own unique place.
And that is the basis of his philosophy; art is a simple enough room with a thousand different entrances, but every one of those entrances requires a discipline to have been joyfully embraced. Avery believes every student is different but all of them want something similar… “a sense of footing, a chance to feel good about wanting to try for something, and all of them already have the ability to get there. They need space.”
“Sometimes a singer stays safe and quiet for months, then suddenly this glorious sound will begin to emerge. Sometimes a pianist will plunk on dutifully for ages, then rush in breathless one day having cracked Pachelbel’s Canon and they can’t stop playing it. So we hold space, and we challenge, and we watch the magic”.

I am excited to continue learning and growing as an instructor throughout the years. Outside of teaching, I am currently in my first year at Western University in the Kinesiology program.
